White Nights

Katherine Simon, 2011

Dostoevsky once had a character say
in a short story that, incidentally, almost put me to sleep
(twice)
“But how did you manage to live, if there is no story?”
As hard as it has been sometimes—
as hard as it can be on all of us
I have lived
I will continue to live
in part because you have added to my story
an irreplaceable character
and unforgettable memories.
